Ham and Lentil Soup Recipe

For a winter warmer that's always a winner, ham and lentil soup is wonderful!

Ham Soup Recipe Ingredients

2 smoked ham hocks, or 1 leftover ham bone
8 cups water
3 1/2 cups beef or vegetable broth
3 1/2 cups mushrooms, chopped
2 1/2 cups lentils
3 onions, chopped
1 cup chopped celery
1 cup chopped carrots
1 x 3-inch cinnamon stick
1 whole bay leaf
fresh, crusty bread, for serving (optional)
sour cream, for serving (optional)

Ham Soup Recipe Directions

In a large soup pot, stir all ingredients together.
Bring it to a low simmer, and let it cook for 1 to 2 hours, partially covered.
Make sure to stir occasionally to keep the vegetables and lentils from sticking to the bottom.
Remove the cinnamon stick and bay leaf.
Also remove the ham bones.
If there is any meat remaining on the bones, chop into the soup before serving.
Can be served with thick slices of crusty fresh bread and a dollop of sour cream in each bowl.
